Contraindications of Some Cancer Chemotherapy By FACT

  1. NITROGEN MUSTARD (Mustargen)
    Bone marrow depression occurs approximately 7 – 10 days after administration.
    Nausea and vomiting.
  2. TRIETHYLENE MELAMINE (TEM)
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
  3. THIO-TEPA
    Same as nitrogen mustard.
  4. BUSULFAN (Myleran)
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
    Hyperpigmentation with Addison-like syndrome.
    Gynecomastia
    Amenorrhea (cessation of the menses)
    Pulmonary fibrosis
  5. CH LORAMBUC IL (Leukeran)
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
  6. MELPHALAN (Alkeran)
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
  7. CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE (Cytoxan)
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
    Alopecia (loss of hair)
    Hemorrhagic cystitis – starts as increased
    frequency and dysuria; can be very severe
  8. VINBLASTINE (Velban)
    Bone marrow depression

    Neuromuscular toxicity
  9. VINCRISTINE (Oncovin)
    Severe constipation
    Neuromuscular toxicity
    Impaired extra-ocular movements
    Cerebe llar signs-positive Romberg
    Alopecia
  10. 5 – FU (Fluorouracil) – inhibits thymidylate synthetase; pyrimidine antagonists
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
    Oral ulcerations
    Bloody diarrhea
    Treat for minimum of 8 weeks – if no response, discontinue; if patient responds, continue weekly 5-FU until relapse
  11. ADRIAMYCIN
    Bone marrow depression
    Cardiac toxicity-premature ventricular contractions and congestive heart failure
    Mucositis
    Alopecia (hair loss)
  12. 6 – MERCAPTOPURINE (Purinethol)
    Bone marrow depression
    Abdominal pain at onset of therapy
    Hepatoxicity
    Nausea and vomiting
  13. CYTOSINE ARABINOSIDE (Cytosar) inhibits DNA
    Severe bone marrow suppresion
    Nausea and vomiting
  14. ACTINOMYCIN-D (Cosmagen)
    Bone marrow depression – may cause thrombocytopenia (reduction of platelets) before leukopenia
    Nausea and vomiting
    Skin eruptions
    Oral ulcerations
    Renal and hepatic toxicity
  15. MITHRAMYCIN
    Bone marrow depression
    Nausea and vomiting
    Hypocalcemia
    Coagulopothies
  16. DAUNOMYCIN (Rubidomycin) (Daunorubicin)
    This drug is very toxic and often causes
    marrow aplasia.
  17. AMETHOPTERIN (Methotrexate) folic acid inhibitor
    Bone marrow depression
    Oral ulcerations
    Nausea and vomiting
    Diarrhea
    Acne
    Cirrhosis
    Pneumonitis (Methotrexate lung)
    Contraindicated in impaired renal function
